Here’s our most ambitious project to date:  a stand alone hill, 18 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 6 inches high.  Modeled on the crumbly, soft sedimentary rocks of the western deserts, it can be used in other climates as well—just add a little vegetation!

Of course, you can cut it to your heart’s desire and use the pieces in different locations.  It you want to use it as a stand-alone hill, you’ll need to add some stiffeners on the bottom side to help it hold its shape.  A few pieces of insulation foam hot-glued to the bottom will do.  If you really want it firm, try applying some plaster-soaked paper towels to the inside.  A thin plaster shell will hold it up nicely.
